Is it safe to use maharAja guggul to lower cholesterol?
Question: There are many websites which recommend and sell 'mahArAJA GUGGUL' for cholesterol related problems and for reducing body fat. is it safe to use mahArAja guggul or yOgarAja guggul?
Answer: My personal belief: Both the preparations contain mercury and sulphur. Some preparations claim that they contain gold also. All the three can generate side effects and auto immunity reactions.
Guggulu as a pure plant extract may not be risky to try. But excess of guggulu can also have side effects.
Simple logic: 1. Anything which can exert some influence on our body's processes can NEVER HAVE ONLY ONLY beneficial effects. Excess use is bound to have deleterious effects. The only question that then arises is whether beneficial effects are more or deleterious effects are more.
2. Moderation is the key. We have to avoid prolonged use.
3. Lowering cholesterol or body fat should not become an obsession by itself. Moderate physical labor for our daily needs helps the muscles to draw glucose from the liver. Some mental labor helps our brain to draw glucose. We cannot continuously use insulin as a tool for converting glucose into fat and store in adipose tissues. Physical work is the key. Pure herbs can help in assimilation process. But we have to prevent them from interfering with our natural processes.
4. Excess use of herbs, convert them into food items. We may need larger doses to get the same result after afflux of time, as our lymphatic system may not respond.
5 I have used, on professional medical advice, yOgarAja guggulu, mahArAja guggulu and other guggulu preparations in my family life, for problems like pains of joints and vAta (air-wind-gas) dOshas. No perceivable benefits. I believe that the drugs have received so much excess publicity, that physicians have started prescribing them automatically just as paracetamol is prescribed for simple fevers.
